What is the Travel 5 Regional
Travel Survey?
It is a survey of daily travel in Spokane and Kootenai
Counties. Daily travel includes the everyday travel
that people do as they go about their lives, such
as going to and from work, going grocery shopping,
visiting friends, going to the gym, going to the mall
to hang out or shop, viewing basketball games, stopping
for coffee or gas, or even just walking the dog or
jogging around the neighborhood!
Every household in the
survey is assigned a day on which to record their
daily travel. Each household member receives a travel
log – the use of
this log is very important in this survey. People
are asked to record every place they go and every stop
they make for a 24-hour period. If people do not use
the log, they forget to write down places they’ve
visited on their travel day, like quick stops to grab
some food or cash from an ATM, or dropping off a friend.
The survey results will
provide a reliable picture of the actual travel patterns
of all types of people in the region – information
that will be used to make planning and funding decisions
about jogging paths, sidewalks, bike routes, roads,
transit, and other transportation infrastructure.
The local sponsors of the survey
are the Spokane
Regional Transportation Council (SRTC) and the Kootenai
Metropolitan Planning Organization (KMPO). Both
of these agencies are responsible for tranportation
planning in their respective county. For more information,
contact Ed Hayes, SRTC, by phone at (509) 343-6370
or by email ehayes@srtc.org.
The survey is being conducted
by NuStats and its survey data collection center,
DataSource, nationally recognized for their travel
survey practice. For more information, contact Ramon
Dickerson at NuStats, phone (toll-free) at 1-866-687-8287
or email rdickerson@nustats.com.
