U.S.
Postal Service
Household Diary Study
The Household Diary Study
(HDS) examines volume and types of mail that U.S. residents
send and receive. This information helps the U.S. Postal
Service ensure an efficient national mail system to
better serve Americans. By providing a comprehensive
and continuous description of the mail originating from
and destinating in American households, USPS collects
data on mail classes, mail contents by class, mail flow
between mailing sectors and by industry, as well as
other types of data. These data provide a basis from
which USPS can make informed decisions about issues
such as: postage rates, staffing needs, performance
improvements and investments in new equipment, facilities,
programs and technologies.
