What is the Washoe Regional
Travel Survey?
It is a survey of daily travel in Washoe County. Daily travel includes the everyday travel that people do as they go about their lives, such as going to and from work, going grocery shopping, visiting friends, going to the gym, going to the mall to hang out or shop, viewing basketball games, stopping for coffee or gas, or even just walking the dog or jogging around the neighborhood!
Every household in the survey is assigned a day on which to record their daily travel. Each household member receives a travel log – the use of this log is very important in this survey. People are asked to record every place they go and every stop they make for a 24-hour period. If people do not use the log, they forget to write down places they’ve visited on their travel day, like quick stops to grab some food or cash from an ATM, or dropping off a friend.
The survey results will provide a reliable picture of the actual travel patterns of all types of people in the region – information that will be used to make planning and funding decisions about jogging paths, sidewalks, bike routes, roads, transit, and other transportation infrastructure.
The local sponsor of the survey is the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), which is responsible for transportation planning in Washoe County. For more information, contact Bobbi Coulter, Project Representative for RTC, by phone at (775) 771-7320 or by email bjcoulter@charter.net.
The survey is being conducted by NuStats and its survey data collection center, NuStats DataSource, nationally recognized for their travel survey practice. For more information, contact Stacey Bricka at NuStats, phone (toll-free) at 1-800-447-8287 or email sbricka@nustats.com.
