Although academics, socio-political activists, business researchers and consumer marketers collect their own data for studies on Hispanics, governmental data still provide solid grounds for Hispanic research. Indeed, a number of federal agencies have produced a rich array of information on the soon-to-be largest minority group in the nation. Researchers interested in Hispanic attitudes and behavior would be well served by first checking with such publicly available Hispanic data.

Information on Hispanics pertaining to topics such as population, age composition, region of residence, income, household type, living arrangements, housing, education, labor force, health, and business can be found on the Internet. The Internet (World Wide Web) now provides the opportunity to quickly access Hispanic-related information.

Search Tools

Given that there are nearly 70 federal agencies issuing statistical data, some users find it a tedious task to successfully navigate the Internet. Thanks to the introduction and sophistication of search engines, Internet users can now easily navigate the Internet to find the information they need. Web-based search engines operate by their individual algorithm – which retrieve the results according to your input of key words. No one search engine covers the entire Web.

Federal Websites

Go to the search engine www.hotbot.com and enter the key words "federal + statistics" to produce at least ten sites. The first site chosen is www.fedstats.gov. Once you have accessed the FedStats web site, you will be able to easily link to the White House Briefing Room (www.whitehouse.gov/WH/html/briefroom.html), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), and the Bureau of the Census (www.census.gov). These four sites hold the most useful government data on Hispanics. Elaborate links have been created between the sites, so users can easily move from one site to another whenever necessary.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics web site contains data on employment, economy and technology characteristics of the nation. The Consumer Expenditure Survey (this annual survey provides information on the buying habits of American consumers) and the National Longitudinal Survey (this survey gathers data about a wide range of events over several decades for six groups of men and women) can be found at this site.
